14. To Our Children

So quietly you sleep inside your mother’s womb
Knowing not what to expect or to see

Embraced by a blanket of warmth and caring
Surrounded by the hope of what you will be

If only we could instill in you all our knowledge and experience
Filling your memories with the roads we have already traveled

We could spare you the trials and tribulations that you will surely encounter
As though you were first to have your life unraveled

When we gaze upon the place you now call home,
It bonds our family closer than all the unspoken truths that trail from our voices

For hidden from our view and masked by nature’s protective covering,
Our thoughts meet together as we focus upon a future filled with only your choices

While life may not be perfect or sane or safe and we may not be able
Fend off the evils and hazards that will block your path

We pledge that as our fingers now entwine that we never falter
To unite as a family to stand together to protect you from an adversary’s wrath

For no matter all the successes and laughter that we will enjoy in the years that lie
ahead,
Your addition to our family means more to us than all the world’s riches and gold

Embodied within your hearts and minds and souls of such small proportions,
You make us remember all that our parents have passed to us as they now grow old

As you enter this world and your lungs embrace all that life has to offer,
Our thoughts will surely drift to your first step, kindergarten, a prom dress, or even a
baseball glove

But at that moment when your mother and I look into each other’s eyes as you toss in
our arms,
We will know God has gifted us with the reason we fell in love
