142. Had I But Known

Had I but known
That chocolate would make you fat
I would have hidden all the goodies
And other such things like that

Had I but known
That roses made you sneeze
I would have lost the florist’s number
And bought you full grown trees

Had I but known
That burgundy was not the perfect shade
I would have picked something different
To prevent your little tirade

Had I but known
That you hated all my jokes
I would have been more serious
When in the company of your folks

Had I but known
That you did not like my shoes
I would have gladly gone barefoot
Or permitted you to choose

Had I but known
That you didn’t really care
I would have saved all my energy
For someone with fairer hair

Had I but known
That you would leave my side
I would have never asked you
To be my wife and bride
