159. Every Man’s Goodbye

If I could but say the things that I think
When I am permitted to be close to you
The oceans would rise and the winds would blow
Upsetting destiny’s balance and turning truths to untrue

Though years have passed with glances unmet
I have often wondered if I had stopped to gain insight
Had I but taken the time to listen to your desires
Would there be a different warmth in our hearts tonight?

While I do know that to write of such feelings
Betrays those I have come to love and admire
But to disavow one’s own confidence in oneself
Is to condemn one’s soul to hell’s fire

I realize that words may hurt or place a smile on a face
Depending upon how they are aimed and intended
Failing to express oneself when life is so short
Is to forgo one’s self before life has truly ended

Surely I know that you are awash in emotions
Gaining strength from those who surround and feed you
Did you ever notice that the power that you brandish
Can convince us that dreams do really come true?

You’ve gained entrance into my and many a heart
Who’ve seen you as someone to worship from afar
Through charm, wit, and the toss of your hair
You’ve shown us you’re confident in being who you are

Needless to say I’ll remain always a friend
Who will forever appreciate your being like fine wine
Tomorrow I’ll certainly convert to Hinduism and pray
That in my next life you could still be mine

So as you leave and walk away from us and me
And take a giant step into your well-deserved position
Know that I wish you’ll break records instead of hearts
And go easy on those men during your transition
