17. The Lily

My heart felt like a newly born lily
Spouting forth from the ground as my petals were caressed by the sun

Experiencing the joy of life for the first time
Comforted by the warmth of the heavens above

Having no knowledge of what came before or will come after
Except for the feeling that love surrounded me and my life had just begun

Though the morning dew quickly gave way to the midday heat
I relished the uncomfortable feeling as just another aspect of love

For by the early evening the stillness of the air had settled over me
Blanketing me with my first glimpses of the ending of a perfect day

So when the evening approached and covered me with unfamiliar darkness
My soul leaped forward to greet the unknown with wonder and delight

Because all about me I felt the presence of others just like me
Who knew the value of our existence and had prepared the way

It was if deep down inside that I had known the purpose of my existence
Was to be picked by a young girl’s hand cherished for life
