171. Our Lives We Did Not Waste

Today I died while on patrol
Barely eighteen of our years
I never really knew myself
Still pink and wet behind the ears

I volunteered without regret
I joined with all my other buddies
To our nation’s service we left
Protecting all from sea to shining seas

I learned as quickly as they taught
On how to kill those that do harm
Never a second thought would I make
I’d give my life before I would disarm

So it was this very day
My platoon was ambushed in the market
They told us to surrender and give up
We were just a sitting duck target

But my commander gave the sign
He just over the age for legal drinking
We cocked our weapons and fired out
Not one of us second guessing his thinking

In moments we all laid out dead
Death claimed us all with great haste
But we died doing our sacred duty
Knowing our lives we did not waste
