178. Gladiators

The national anthem exploded in our ears
Our thoughts were geared for killing
We saw blood beneath our helmets
Our enemies would not find this thrilling

Four sleek jets flew overhead
Their exposed bellies signaling us to go
Our captains moved and assembled on the field
Our fates and position we would soon know

Amongst the roar of a thousand souls
We took the field and battled
Gladiators fighting to secure their land
Hoping the opposition would quit when rattled

Yet neither side would give way
Victory given and taken from the arms of men
Reinforcements were prepared to move in
Just really never knowing where and when

We secured some points for our side once
But they recovered and made us hurt
We both gave and took the best we could
Men fighting valiantly for an inch of dirt

And then it ended as we planned
We prevailed and took another day
We crushed our opponents with our offense
For the Super Bowl we would someday play
