23. Midnight

Moonlight and roses and champagne galore
White laced smiles pasted smugly on freshly painted faces

Eccentricities replacing integrity, the platinum charge card was king
Opulence beset by frugality, expensive wine downed by the cases

Feeble attempts at meaningful conversation cast adrift in the air
Replaced by seductive laughter and promises never to be kept

People adorned in the finery of the ages
A cruel critic’s comments, a performance not adept

Neither trophies nor ribbons nor awards to be given
Arm candy to be taken, exchanged at the nod of the head

Beauty and vanity from the dark side of morality
Traffic signals to virtue, not green but red

A good intentioned toast to peace for all men
Voices mouthing for sanity but whispering for war

The clock strikes twelve and the future stays hidden
God will shed a tear for us no more
