237. The Mouse

A mouse approached a brown hare
And asked for food for the day
But the rabbit said no angrily
And just hopped himself away

When the mouse came to a den
And repeated his need for a meal
A mountain lion roared for him to leave
After all, if eaten himself how hungry would he feel

Undaunted the mouse continued on
Asking for food from all he met
When he explained that the rain was coming
They said that was why the food he wouldn’t get

Not disheartened the mouse found a farm
Though he knew people couldn’t speak to him
So he ventured inside and found such treasure
With a pet’s food bowl filled to the brim

So the little mouse ate all he could
He stuffed himself on such a feast
In fact he had eaten so much he couldn’t move
And of the pet he couldn’t care the least

Suddenly a cat did finally appear
His claws extended as he made a hiss
He asked why the mouse had just eaten
All the food from his favorite dish

The mouse just burped and sighed
His stomach to the point of bursting
When he did manage to give an apology
He told the cat that now he was thirsty

But the cat was a noble host
He showed the mouse to some fresh cream
When the mouse had gorged himself again
The cat suggested that he just sleep and dream

As the mouse was quite pleased with himself
Having eaten without doing work or paying
He made himself home in the cat’s bed
And had all the intentions of remaining and staying

A short time later the mouse was no longer hungry
For the cat had cured him of his pain
The cat just smiled and insured his bowls were quite full
Especially for the next mouse who came in from the rain
