257. One June Day

When it all ended on one June day
Hardly a citizen had any idea
Had we but known would we have changed
The way we treated our neighbors?
Would we have given more than we got
Forgoing greed from other people’s labors?
If we had taken a lesson from history
Could we have altered our own sordid past?
Surely we must have learned from the Romans
That empires soon die and never last
Our flag did fly atop of many lands
From sea to desert and more
Were we so blind that we missed our demise
Happy endings exist only in lore
We didn’t see them coming so smug were we
The technological giant of all mankind
They invaded us without firing a shot
Such a stealth enemy made them difficult to find
They took control of all our systems
Our finance and defense they soon ruled
Had we not outsourced all that we were
Maybe we would never have been fooled
But so our rule did come to an end
Our resistance never really mattered
They took our lives and our hopes
Our flag now lies torn and tattered
