264. The Invisible Man

I walked right over a homeless man
His haggard body sprawled on the station floor
I didn’t really see this invisible man
Because my schedule hastened me out the door
Who he was or had ever been
Didn’t matter to me or those who did follow
We were more concerned about our own lives
Choosing to ignore things that bring hurt and sorrow
Surely if a hurt puppy had lain there
A number of persons would have stopped to help
Are we just taught to ignore such things
Or to provide assistance only to species that yelp?
What if our situations were reversed
Could I survive in a world so blind
Where would I find help and salvation
From persons who avoided my kind?
So I vow this day to open my eyes
For I realize that no one should be invisible
I’ll strive to now help where I can
One nation, under God, indivisible
