33. Rememberings

I remember when things were green and blue
Where summer days were filled with fun
And we dreamed of places we would travel

I remember the little red-headed girl
Whose freckles mapped our friendship
And innocence protected the secrets that others would unravel

I remember those summer days all hot and sunny
When my mother served us frozen treats
And sweetness was served to us on a stick

I remember thinking how eagerly I wanted to get older
While feeling sorry for my aged grandmother
And cringed in embarrassment at her nervous tick

I remember what I thought were happier times
Whose days were graced with children
And laughter and giggling filled the air

I remember that friendships disappeared
When we would least expect it
And we hardly gave a thought to persons who had once been there

I remember saying goodbye to a life
While the moving van pulled away
And my mother frowned and cried

I remember the reason I must now remember
Why my thoughts were then filled with joy
And everything changed the day my childhood died
