337. Torture

They say we tortured our prisoners
We forced them to do horrible things
Our guards turned them into slobbering blobs
And subdued them with whatever sadism brings
These acts of vile irreverence
Were broadcast around the planet
Our critics were quick to say harsh words
Especially about how we could condone it
While there is no excuse for such behavior
War breeds the worst in men
For retribution is taken without thought
And spreads quickly from where it began
But those who have never served or fought
Or watched their comrades fall and die
Know not what darkness grows in hate
Or else they wouldn’t wonder why
