34. The Captain

Scarcely did I venture forth
On such a miserable day

My boat much smaller than a schooner
And the skies stormy and gray

I left the harbor my sails wide open
The wind pushing hard the canvas had no slack

The waves soon crashed around
And broke my poor vessel’s back

A gallant effort I did make
To save the passengers and the crew

But the decrepit lifeboats broke apart
There was nothing we could do

Screams filled the air
From children, men, and ladies

I cursed our Lord and Nautilus too
For stealing the lives of babies

As captain of my mighty boat
I said a final prayer

I wished for a speedy passage to the bottom
Hoping angels would greet us there
