| 347. The Sand The sand felt gritty and so hot It permeated my clothes and skin I laid sprawled out in a desert place Waiting for my orders to begin I’d been in a similar position many times before A soldier merely doing what he is told Though many a colleague has died at my side I’m hardly considered courageous or bold I’m just a servant of my beloved country A boy who maybe one day will be a man I fight for what our forefathers have given And for the freedom for which we stand I don’t really know why there’s hate Or why people desire to bring pain I just know that I believe in who we are And fight to end the terrorism that we disdain Though I desire not to fall or die Or to give my life without a specific reason I say my prayers everyday for peace And to give hope to those who have none So if we fail to do our part And to stand up for those to weak or frail What good is our own freedom to us If to bring liberty to others we do fail |
