407. The Journey

Though the journey was hard he couldn’t stop
His arms and legs ached from the pain
For five days he had run without sleeping
Through sunshine, snow, fog, and rain
He had to get the message through
The barbarians were way too fast
He had to give his country some extra time
For without the time they would not last
Hunger reminded him of his mission
He scooped water from rivers as he ran
Just one of a hundred when he first started
He now survived as the only man
Chased by wolves and other such beasts
His body was bruised and bloody
The sandals he had were long ago gone
His feet now blistered and muddy
Yet he continued until he reached the gates
His winded voice echoing the alarm
And then it was his body collapsed
His limp body supported by one arm
With the deed done and the city saved
The brave soldier closed his eyes to sleep
And then he died and past away
For the runner we do now weep
