420. The Distance

The wind danced lightly upon my skin
As the rising sun warmed my face
The world around me was quiet and still
A moment in time enjoying God’s place
No stress or conflict were here right now
A bird whistled its morning call
Drops of dew spilt from tender leaves
Man would never understand the beauty of it all
For in the distance arose the sound of humanity
The clanking of steel upon sullen ground
Creatures fell silent as man approached
The noise of war makes a hideous sound
The heat of battle burned my face
Smoke blanketed out the sun’s soothing rays
Dew was replaced by sweat and blood
Nature’s beauty lost in chaotic haze
In minutes man’s hubris had passed by
The wind blew with the stench of war
Man’s destruction now hid in the sky
We won the battle but at what cost
No care taken as we packed and went away
We left our scars and wounds upon the earth
Mankind once again doing as we may
