423. A Single Step

I took a simple single step
The first time in forever
I can’t explain the elation I felt
For they said it might be never
That summer night is just a blur
The excitement racing in my veins
I’d had one too many beers I think
Before racing across those highway lanes
It happened so fast I couldn’t react
My car no longer wanted to obey
I lost control when I hit one hundred
I remembered nothing else that day
The nurses told me I was almost gone
My life teetered between life and death
I’ve learned my lesson about driving drunk
And will remember this time to my dying breath
