424. Gay

I used to despise the others out there
The ones who prefer their own
I couldn’t contemplate how they chose
Thinking they should remain alone
To distort the word gay was insulting to all
Turning happiness into a queer thing
It wasn’t until later that I did learn
That love isn’t defined by a wedding ring
Tolerance isn’t really what I acquired
For my prejudice was tainted by others
I came to understand we’re really the same
Such a diverse group of sisters and brothers
For sex defines not who you are
It is simply a fact of being alive
We all deserve to have joy and happiness
From our true selves never having to hide
