446. Flames

Flames burnt brightly against the horizon
Orange tongues licking at the black sky
The heat warmed the winter night
The houses’ occupants left wondering why
Crackling ambers spread their blossoms
A fireman’s hose seeking to calm the same
Sirens and yells broke the silence
The battalion commander ordered his men by name
Steam arose as water and fire greeted
Both seeking to claim territory for their own
The fire was contained by men and equipment
Working feverishly to stop it before it had grown
Carelessness caused by the need for romance
Unwatched candles claimed more than a heart
Two lovers singed by passion’s failing
The flames of desire needing no fuel to start
