512. Kindred Spirits

Oh kindred spirits buried in the ground
No faces to express your sorrow
We salute your gallantry this day
But no prayers can give you back tomorrow
You did your duty although so young
Your journey into life ended as a child
We sent you willingly to save our souls
And to protect those once defiled
How could you know what we all thought
That fate cares not about one’s years
We’d done our duty before your birth
Lucky enough to survive our own dark fears
No longer will you embrace those loved
The cold grass gives no solace to those now dead
What spirit remains is kept alive in thought
And in memories stored safely in our head
Words will never properly pay our respect
To your heroism or why you once fought
Yet in your honor we thank God for you
And pray your passing was not for naught
