594. Smell of Cookies

The sweet smell of cookies awaken the past
Succulent delights from days so long ago
Thoughts of Santa and dreams yet to be
Preferring our fantasy than truths we shouldn’t know
Brightly colored lights blinking on the tree
Reminders of friends and lovers no longer here
For a moment they’re brilliant and all that we see
Faint memories of happiness we hold so near
Holiday carols elicit such joy and delight
Our days as children relived with a song
Things look differently when covered in snow
Feelings released after being hidden so long
We escape from our lives if for only a day
The spirit of the season warms all on earth
No matter our religion or what we believe
We all the more fortunate because of His birth
