616. The Table

I look around the table and smile
For before me sits the lives I hold dear
Friends and colleagues and my relatives
Brought together from places both far and near
I raise my glass and toast you all
For without you my life matter not
Though we celebrate the passing of another year
It is I who am humbled by what you’ve taught
You’ve shown me how to laugh and care
Despite the things that make all cry
From you own frailty you’ve shown me true love
Forgiving my failings without ever asking why
While I’ve tried to be I was often bad
Your disappointment painted across your face
Yet you stuck by me and showed me compassion
Keeping room for me in your own special place
No fear have I had of the world out there
For I’ve learned that I can depend on you all
When things were the worse you were there always
If I needn’t help all I had to do was call
While accepting the passing of time is quite hard
Much worse if on others one never ever depends
Life has no meaning if being alone is what we have
My greatest fortune is having such good friends
